"It is difficult to determine, but there must have been a time when nature and silence were synonymous. In travel descriptions from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the silence of nature, which was still untouched at the time, is completely self-evident. Nature was silence.
Inspired by a haiku by the 17th century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō, THIS AUTUMN EVE is my personal, contemporary search for silence.
In THIS AUTUMN EVE I take you into a world that is remote and timeless. A world in silence.
The images show the rugged beauty of the empty Northern landscape, from snow-covered fields to misty salt marshes and along deserted roads we spot an abandoned barn here and there in the late autumn light, mostly photographed in black and white, supplemented with a single image in color .
THIS AUTUMN EVE is a response to the loss of nature in our country and the resulting loss of values such as silence, darkness and space."
"I am an independent, autonomously working photographer, living in Noardeast Fryslân, the Netherlands. For years I have drawn my inspiration from the nature and landscape of the North. These landscapes allow me to express more of my personal vision and feelings, to slow down and notice details. Early memories and a lifelong fascination with silence play a major role in this.
