Subtext/Background/Description

"It didn’t even bother her that much that her husband would go away on his many business trips and wouldn’t call her for days. As she couldn’t fully admit yet to herself, the world seemed to touch her in a more profound and meaningful way when he wasn’t there." In the following years Dorothy King would write furiously during these times of solitude and lay the groundwork for her first novel: “In The Corner of Men”.

Mixed media

Pastel pencil, paint and collage applied to a photograph. This image was then printed very small on thin cheap copy paper, creating a mysterious structure and grain. This photo was then reproduced with a macro lens on a full frame camera.

About Maarten van Schaik

"I am fascinated by anonymity and abandonment. I move through the world, searching for anonymity and trying to capture what others do not see. My work is not about pure registration, but has a strong connection with painting, poetry and music. The subjects I photograph remain covered, but reveal an indefinable, distant reality, where dream and reality merge. Time has become diffuse."

Since graduating from the Rietveld Academy in 1997, Maarten has developed a unique style of photography. His work is created during long walks on the border between nature and city. He has worked in Las Vegas, Yellowstone, Bangkok, London, Lanzarote, Amsterdam, the old Route 66 and Normandy, among others.
