Frank works as a portrait photographer for de Volkskrant, NRC, Het Parool, various magazines and publishers, and also on autonomous projects.
He grew up in a small village in Groningen, where he accidentally came into contact with a camera at the age of nineteen. That moment felt magical; where his mind was always restless, he suddenly discovered the power of freezing time. This still fascinates him, and he tries to get to the core by leaving out everything that does not add anything. He likes to make his portraits with natural (or available) light, because of its unique and variable nature, which forces him to be impulsive and creative.
When Frank photographs people, he looks for a look in the eyes where the camera disappears. This is often a long and fluid process, in which the social and technical complement each other. By having real conversations, moments arise that cannot be predicted.
He recently exhibited at the Sophiahof museum, with portraits of people who grew up in the Dutch East Indies during the Second World War. These portraits can also be seen in the book Over Indië by Frank Vermeulen. And recently, 17 large black-and-white portraits from his 15-year-old Volskrant archive were also on display at the Verkadefabriek in Den Bosch.
As an autodidact, he has great admiration for the early work of Anton Corbijn, because of the raw style and the high contrast. By analyzing Corbijn's work, he has learned to frame himself. He is currently investigating how he can make more free work, in which people are still central, but with a more abstract approach. For example, 19 years ago he took a photo in the middle of the night in Barcelona, with an interesting story about how he was almost robbed right after the photo was taken - read on his Instagram.
