"The location is on the river in Porto, It was a pretty desolate area where there were some tents under the palm trees where people slept. In my work I often come across the 'strange' trees, often more dead than alive. I process many photos later in drawings, but every now and then there is an image that simply remains as a photo."


Anouk Griffioen (Enschede, 1979) lives and works in Rotterdam. She has exhibited at Hauser Gallery Zurich, Mathilde C. Gallery Paris, Kers Gallery Amsterdam, Flatland Gallery Amsterdam, Pictura Dordrecht and RAM foundation in Rotterdam. She explores the boundaries of visual arts using other disciplines, through collaborations with designers and architects, among others. She designed a sweater together with the label Anecdote (2015) and a scarf for accessory label The Boyscouts (2014). In 2011 she collaborated with Humanoid in the context of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale. Griffioen is also active for Orange Babies, a foundation that supports pregnant women with HIV in developing countries. Her drawings regularly appear in the TV series Penoza, as work by the character Nathalie van Walraven. In 2013 she won De Kracht van Rotterdam with her photography. Griffioen studied Fine Art at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and art history at Leiden University. In 2016-2018 she received a Work Grant for Proven Talent from the Mondriaan Fund.
